HCC Faculty Lead a Design Team for Houston Habitat Project
Two of our interior design faculty members, Rachelle Starr, MPS, ASID, IDEC, and Shasta Swift, Allied Member ASID headed a design team in the recent Houston Habitat for Humanity project called “Beyond the Build.” This Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Community Involvement project aimed to take a newly built Habitat house and to show how using appropriate design principles can transform a space both inside and out, on any budget.
Rachelle and Shasta led their design team for the “Francine” home model, and worked with other designers and volunteers to complete the project. The homes were featured at a Block Party on October 3, 2008.
HCC Interior Design Students Treated to Tour of Local Designer’s Home
November 21, 2008, HCC’s interior design students and program advisors were welcomed into the Tanglewood-area home of renowned interior decorator J. Randall Powers (known as Randy to his friends). Powers designs, both residential and commercial, have been showcased around the country. They have also been featured in many design publications, including Southern Accents, House Beautiful, The New York Times, Paper City, Brilliant, Martha Stewart Living, and on the cover of Elle Décor. He has also recently launched a lighting line through Visual Comfort that is available nationwide.
Powers was kind enough to allow HCC’s aspiring designers access to his entire home, and was available to answer questions and provide advice based on his immense knowledge and experience. His home, which was recently featured in the May 2008 Elle Décor magazine, brings together stunning furnishings, unique accessories, historical pieces, and striking artwork, all featured in a neutral palette of creams and whites. The home is flooded with amazing natural light through the many windows looking out on the well manicured and beautifully landscaped yard.
The tour and time with Powers was inspiring, to say the least. A big Thank You goes to J. Randall Powers for opening his home and taking the time to meet with us.
HCC Students Give to the Salvation Army for the Holidays
This holiday season, HCC Interior Design students opened their hearts by donating gifts for children and the elderly to the Salvation Army. HCC student Susma Bhakta organized the gift collection through the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, and it was a great success. Thanks to all who donated gifts this year; we know they will go a long way to making someone’s holiday extra special.
